Pediatric myofunctional therapy is a gentle, non-invasive approach that focuses on how the muscles of the mouth and face function. These muscles play a critical role in how your child breathes, swallows, speaks, and grows.
When these patterns aren’t functioning correctly, they can impact everything from sleep quality to dental development.
Why It Matters
During childhood, the face and airway are still developing. Small habits—like mouth breathing or improper tongue posture—can lead to bigger challenges over time.
Myofunctional therapy helps guide proper development and may support:
Healthier breathing patterns
Improved sleep quality
Proper jaw and facial growth
Reduced need for extensive orthodontics
Better focus, behavior, and overall wellness
Signs Your Child May Benefit
Your child may be a great candidate if you notice:
Mouth breathing (day or night)
Snoring or restless sleep
Open-mouth posture
Thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use
Speech concerns (such as a lisp)
Difficulty chewing or swallowing
Crowded teeth or a narrow palate
Frequent congestion or “dark circles” under the eyes
What to Expect
Therapy is personalized, supportive, and designed to be engaging for children.
Each program includes:
A comprehensive evaluation
Customized exercises for the tongue, lips, and facial muscles
Breathing retraining (encouraging nasal breathing)
Habit elimination support
Simple, short daily exercises at home
Parents play an important role, and I’ll guide you every step of the way to ensure your child’s success.
My Approach
As a registered dental hygienist with advanced training in airway and myofunctional therapy, I take a whole-child approach—focusing on function, not just symptoms.
I also collaborate with trusted providers when needed, including dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, and speech specialists, to ensure your child receives comprehensive care.
A Simple Way to Think About It
Myofunctional therapy is like physical therapy for the mouth and face—helping your child develop the habits they need for a lifetime of healthy breathing, sleep, and growth.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face, which directly impact how you breathe, sleep, swallow, and feel day to day. When these patterns are off, they can contribute to chronic symptoms that are often overlooked or misattributed.
Why It Matters
Many adults have lived for years with improper oral habits—often without realizing it. Over time, this can affect:
Sleep quality and energy levels
Jaw tension, clenching, or grinding (TMJ symptoms)
Headaches and facial pain
Airway function and breathing patterns
Orthodontic relapse after braces or aligners
Myofunctional therapy addresses the root cause—helping your muscles function the way they were designed to.
Signs You May Benefit
You may be a good candidate if you experience:
Mouth breathing or difficulty breathing through your nose
Snoring or poor sleep quality
Daytime fatigue or brain fog
Jaw pain, clicking, or tension
Teeth grinding or clenching
Tongue thrust or swallowing issues
History of orthodontic relapse
Forward head posture or tension in the neck/shoulders
What to Expect
Therapy is customized to your goals and lifestyle, with a focus on realistic, sustainable change.
Your program may include:
A comprehensive evaluation of breathing, posture, and oral function
Targeted exercises to retrain the tongue and facial muscles
Nasal breathing retraining and habit awareness
Support for eliminating compensatory patterns
Simple daily exercises (just a few minutes a day)
Sessions are designed to fit into your routine—whether in-person or virtual.
My Approach
With a background in dental hygiene and advanced airway-focused training, I take a whole-body approach—connecting oral function to sleep, breathing, and overall health.
I also collaborate with other providers when appropriate, including dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, and sleep specialists, to ensure comprehensive care.

Welcome, I’m Crystal
—a dental hygienist, mom of two, and the heart behind Breathe & Balance.
After years in dentistry, I started to see patterns in my patients that went beyond brushing and flossing—mouth breathing, poor sleep, and habits that were affecting their overall health. When I looked closer, I realized many of these issues start in childhood.
As a mom, that hit home.
I became passionate about helping families understand and address these concerns early, in a way that feels manageable and not overwhelming. Now, I help both kids and adults build healthier habits that support better breathing, sleep, and long-term wellness.
